NEW RESTAURANT TAKES FLIGHT WITH RESPONSIVE BRAND I.D.
When wood-fired mobile restaurant Cavern City Eats approached us to breathe visual life into their new endeavor, we jumped at the chance. They gave us full creative freedom to create their Brand Identity System with one caveat; they wanted their Bat mascot to be based off of an old piece we created several years before forming The OMA Agency.
The process for this Brand Identity System began with the development of the Bat mascot. We knew that we wanted this guy to be unique and memorable with a happy demeanor because a.) We wanted our clients to stand out from the competition, and b.) because c’mon, who DOESN’T smile at wood-fired deliciousness?
Being a mobile wood-fired restaurant, some of the entrees and desserts are pizza-based offerings, so the logical first sketch after initial character development was to have the Bat holding a ‘Za on a pizza peel! Other variations included a large-footed bat holding a pizza slice flag, the large-footed bat surfing on a pizza cutter, as well as variations with the pizza peel being held in different positions. Note the sketch at bottom left; this is an alternate view of the Bat’s profile that was ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
Once the initial drafts were presented and revisions were requested, we began the final development of the mascot and brandmark. We added a pair of wayfarer-style shades and a chef’s hat to really hone in on the Bat’s character. We then set about playing with various color palettes, eventually settling on a Neapolitan Ice Cream inspired palette to help set the brand apart while calling back to the Italian heritage of pizza.
“GOOD TIMES, GREAT EATS!”
Too often, brands don’t implement taglines into their identities and ethos, and although it might not always be a necessity, we have a great deal of fun here at OMA creating taglines for the projects we take on. The ownership of Cavern City Eats are a group that know how to relax, take it easy, and have a good time. They also know how to make damn fine food that will peak your interest and leave you satisfied. It wasn’t a stretch to adopt “GOOD TIMES. GREAT EATS!” as the burgeoning businesses slogan. (We might have played around a bit with some other adjectives like better, nice, and real but we’re not telling anyone.)
Once settled on the brand’s tagline, we set out to create the Wordmark. We knew this had to pair well with the mascot and utilize the color palette while also looking stellar in black or white. We settled on a rough hand style wordmark and tested several editions before reaching the final result.
THE FINISH LINE
Collateral for this project included T-Shirt, Business Card, Apron and Decal design. Ultimately, our client was wholly satisfied with the final deliverables and The OMA Agency was satisfied to have another Brand I.D. under our belts. One that embodies what this mobile wood-fired restaurant is all about; “Good Times. Great Eats!”.
